It's hard to give these books much more than 3 stars. I would do 3.5 if I could because it deserves more as it doesn't have Hawk in it. Too much reliance burns me out on him. I also like that it stayed in Boston.

The new Spenser writer is almost like reading the Parker Spenser but not quite. An excellent beach/pool book and most Spenser fans will enjoy if not love this entry into the series.

Ace Atkins has found his voice

Ace Atkins is an excellent writer, and, like Robert Parker before him, took a while to find his voice with Spenser. Loved this adventure and look forward to many more.

4 stars for book #46 in the Spenser series, started by the late Robert B. Parker and now written by Ace Atkins, authorized by the Parker estate. It can be read as a stand alone. This book has Spenser hired by a Boston Art Museum to help them recover a valuable stolen painting by El Greco, worth upwards of $60 million. They have received letters from someone who claims to know where the painting is. However, Spenser is fired and replaced by an arrogant British detective, who spends most of his time following Spenser. Spenser decides to stay on the case as an independent contractor.
He is soon involved with high end art thieves, aging Mafia bosses and retired cops who worked the case 20 years ago. Spenser retains his wisecracking demeanor throughout. He does solve the case.
This was a library book that I read in 2 days. I recommend it to Parker fans and private eye fans.

This is the first Spenser book that I’ve read by an author other than Robert Parker. All in all it wasn’t bad — Atkins did an excellent job continuing the sass and witty banter that Spenser fans know and love. My biggest issue with this book was that there were SO many characters and it was hard to keep them all straight and remember how Spenser knew each one. It felt unnecessarily convoluted.

Am I the only one that absolutely loves Joe Mantegna as Spenser?

description

I don't know if I would like these books as much with another narrator. He's perfect!

Originally published on my blog: Nonstop Reader.

Spenser's 46th outing in novel form sees him chasing a priceless painting which was stolen 20 years ago in a famous heist at the Gardner museum.

Spenser is on the trail and willing to do whatever it takes to finish the job and honor the last wishes of a friend. There's also a 5 million dollar reward, and he's up against everyone to see the assignment through.

There aren't so many things in life which are guaranteed to deliver. Spenser, even on this 46th (!!!) installment, really does. I love his mouthy attitude, his honor and his style. Pure 100% unadulterated entertainment. I love Spenser. I admit trepidation when Ace Atkins took over the series, but they're really wonderful (this is the 7th book by my count since R.B.Parker passed away in 2010).

Due out 1 May, 2018 from Penguin - Putnam. 320 pages, available in ebook, hardcover and audio- formats.

Five stars. I devoured this in one sitting.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher.

I have enjoyed all of the previous Ace Atkin Spenser novels. This one, not so much. The voice is still there but honestly I couldn't give a hoot about the mystery. I found it uninteresting and lackluster. This was closer to a 2.5 star. I still enjoy hearing Spenser talk but the book lacked any depth. I hope this is a one off and not the beginning of the end for me and Spenser.

Mr. Atkins decidedly makes things more difficult for Spenser than Mr. Parker did in later years. I like it.

Used to read Spenser a lot when Parker was writing it. The story is fascinating. The ending is not what it appears. An exciting read.
