Upsetting how I don’t remember much about this book, only that it was beautiful and that I finished it in one sitting. Will definitely re-read

I found this book hard to read. There were bits of nonsense thrown into the narrative, which fit with the character, but broke the flow of the story for me. I read it because my kids were reading it...I had no idea that this was tied to an actual person - and I was disappointed with the lack of plot. Once I realized it was about Pablo Naruto's childhood I realized I had been expecting too much 'action' and looked back on it more fondly.

4.5/5 stars. Beautiful writing and an amazing story. I would lay down my life for Neftalí. Also, this book made me realize that I've really gotta start reading more in Spanish.

This is a beautiful looking children’s book. It’s a fictionalised account of the childhood of Pablo Neruda and is a great introduction to him as well as to the history of Chile. The illustrations and arrangement of the text really add to the story and I loved the magical realism that is woven through the story.

A beautiful introduction to Pablo Neruda, and a lovely story of a child who is simply different. It had just enough adversity and conflict to make a great story, but maintains enough lightness and imagination to keep young readers from becoming discouraged or frustrated by Neftali's misfortunes.
