This is an awkward one for me to review, because it doesn't fit what I was expecting. The label fits the package, though. These are diaries. And… I think that is why I couldn't convince myself to give it more than three stars. Because it was a pleasant enough read, but… there was nothing much beyond that. It provided a bit of a glimpse about what it was like to love women as a woman in a time that was less open to that than today, but… it was mostly a glimpse of a life in an earlier world than I have ever lived in.

I kind of want to read Volume 2, but… I think that's mostly because I enjoy reading diaries (recalling years ago reading the (edited) diaries of a British politician of some sort, even though I had no idea who he was beyond what I could find on the back cover of the book when I picked it off a library shelf).

I could maybe persuaded to lift my rating to 3.5 stars, but I don't know that I liked it quite enough to give it a full four stars.

I don't normally think of diaries as being compelling reads, but I really found almost every one of Anne's entries to be fascinating. Not only did she document her crushes, but she also took fastidious notes on just about everything she ate, her travels, and local parties and gossip.
