The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister: Volume I by Anne Lister

3.0

This is an awkward one for me to review, because it doesn't fit what I was expecting. The label fits the package, though. These are diaries. And… I think that is why I couldn't convince myself to give it more than three stars. Because it was a pleasant enough read, but… there was nothing much beyond that. It provided a bit of a glimpse about what it was like to love women as a woman in a time that was less open to that than today, but… it was mostly a glimpse of a life in an earlier world than I have ever lived in.

I kind of want to read Volume 2, but… I think that's mostly because I enjoy reading diaries (recalling years ago reading the (edited) diaries of a British politician of some sort, even though I had no idea who he was beyond what I could find on the back cover of the book when I picked it off a library shelf).

I could maybe persuaded to lift my rating to 3.5 stars, but I don't know that I liked it quite enough to give it a full four stars.
