I was disappointed with the book. I was expecting more action and more steampunk devices. The ending was also quite disappointing - it is clearly part of a series, but I don't feel compelled to read the next book.
Overall, the book was okay

I tried but it just did not hook me in. I may try again later. I know sometimes it's just the wrong time

I’m being generous with these two stars because it’s YA. Either 1) It really is not a great book, period, or 2) I’m just not the target audience here.

The idea of an alternate history with steampunk elements sounded so intriguing! The cover got me. Unfortunately, the story just doesn’t go there. There is very little world building aside from simply being told they

This was my first venture into the steampunk genre, and I wasn't sure how I would like it. That being said, I love steampunk! (Steampunk being historical fiction with a sci-fi/fantasy/magic elements.) The story is set in a post-American Revoluation world where the British have defeated the Patriots. The main character, Charlotte, is a strong, feisty protagonist, who fights for what she believes in. She, along with her brother Ash, love interest Jack, and additional characters are fighting with the Resistance, a group that wants to end the British rule over the land while also trying to solve the mystery that is the character of Grave - who is he? where did he come from? why can he not remember anything?

All in all a great book, and I know just the students to have read it next!

Liked: writing, plot, characters
Disliked: the romantic development. I understand what the author meant to convey, but it was poorly expressed (Of course I love him! I must love him! Why else have I hated him all this time?)
Definitely pulled one into their world very smoothly.

Not a completely miserable read overall, but I have a few personal beefs to bring up:

This book's main character is ridiculously immature. I spent a significant amount of time wanting to throw things at her. That said, if she does some growing up in the sequel the trilogy could definitely be salvaged, and there are signs that this could be the case. Fingers crossed.

Romance is, arguably, the book's most major plot element. This was unexpected as there were no real hints of this in the book's synopsis, and it was a bit if a disappointment. When I read steampunk I personally was awesome world building first and foremost, and despite a really awesome premise and loads of potential I think much was sacrificed in the name of a really painful love triangle between an immature girl, a selfish boy, and his bland and underdeveloped brother.

Overall I just wanted more from this read than I got. Still, I'm considering grabbing the sequel so I guess it wasn't too painful...

Promising at first and from the blurb, but took on too much for its short length. Forgettable.

A wee bit too much romance to make this universally loved, but REALLY cool premise.
