Review and rating only for Dave's Head by Suzanne Palmer.

The main characters are really strong and unique. A female engineer! A talking dino head! The narration and dialogue were fun. But, I found the conclusion did not really explain the main plot. This is barely a novelette, it could use a few more pages since there's still a story to tell.

Anyway, still a very good one. Suzanne Palmer is now added to my fave short fiction writer since I read some of her stuff from last year that are really good.

Review for Dave‘s Head by Suzanne Palmer

This is—you guessed it—a short story about a head.

He’s taken his head off again, somehow, and I never can figure how he does it with no thumbs or even fingers, and I know my uncle didn’t help, but there it is on the rug waiting for me, Dave’s head, and he opens his gigantic mouth wide and looks at me with his big, brown fake eyes, and says, “Road trip?”

The narrator takes an interesting road trip with Dave’s head, that‘s for sure! A slightly different AI story... This was fun, although I couldn‘t quite grasp what the author intended to say with this story — I didn‘t read it in one sitting though, which might have been the reason.

I will read more by the author, this is the second of her stories that I really liked.

Pretty meh issue overall except for Malinche by Gabriela Santiago, a story about a Aztec woman who takes revenge on her opressors. Very good story with a good imagery, very interesting steampunk-ish worldbuilding, strong female lead that, while unlikeable, isn't afraid of making hard decisions and a great writing. This story saved the issue for me and it's the only fantasy story.
