Why do we search for realism in art when we could be searching for the poetry in science?

Quite dense if you aren't familiar with the genus and species he mentions, and some of the more interesting parts are skimmed over. I recommend the episode of The Dollop podcast on Darwin if Jemmy Button and York Minster intrigue you.

A nice introduction to Darwin’s writing, containing a few passages from his writings on the Beagle. Very quick read. Some phrases were genuinely beautiful.

My 6th book finished in 2023.

I've already read the full book, so just read this to get my stats up. But it makes me want to re-read Voyage of the Beagle.

It definitely doesn't capture the most interesting parts of that book - I rated Voyage Of The Beagle a 4. It still captures the adventurous side of Darwin, but it's too short for me to rate it any higher.

A short and poetic insight into just a few of Darwin's thoughts around Patagonia, Tierra de Fuego, and the Strait of Magellan, this book is really good for just a quick, one-sitting read. When 'science' comes to mind, one may not expect to find eloquence and descriptions of beauty, but Darwin delivers just that, as he excellently conveys the feeling of experiencing exotic and strange lands.
