Lau's category-length het romances are usually solid 3-star reads for me. But this one had a few too many tropes that are my anti-catnip:

• Female protagonist is dating (and presumably sleeping with) a guy who is not the male romantic lead for the first half of the book
• Female protagonist has dated current billionaire boyfriend for more than a year, and has not thought to ask him much about his work or wealth (which, it turns out, stems largely from his abuse of workers and his shady business dealings)
• Love-at-first-sight (at least on the part of the male protagonist)

I didn’t like the romance as much as previous books in the series (it understandably took them a while to get together and then they needed to sort things out), but I really liked the complex family relationships and the strong friendships (both hallmarks of Lau’s books). I also “liked” learning more about Rose and I’m looking forward to reading her book later this year. I’ve already preordered it. :)

One last thing: given the setting of the book (March) and the timing of its release (March), its accurate reflection of this week’s weather was hilarious. Southern Ontario in March/April for the win.

I read the books in this series because they’re usually pretty lighthearted and sweet. This one was… not great. The characters felt like cardboard cutouts of people. Some of the dialogue is oddly stilted. Also, this guy starts more or less stalking the FMC while she’s still dating the other guy - showing up at her store, then showing up AGAIN after she said “please don’t come to my store again.” I just wasn’t feeling it, but it’s short so I finished it anyway.

Love Sierra's relationship with her grandfather here and the mutual care that persists between them through his dementia.

Didn't love some dynamics of the relationship here, but the things I didn't love were discussed (if not really addressed?).

I don't know, between the instalove and the senseless arguments, this one just felt really forced. Better luck next time, Jackie

I really like Jackie Lau’s books a lot, enough to have made an effort to read her entire backlist. However, I cannot get into this book. I am not enjoying the story or the characters. I am hoping this is just a one-time thing. DNF at 50%.

Jack Lau does a great job writing about family and friendships… this book is no exception.

Unfortunately the romance in this book didn’t work for me. It’s fated mates/insta love which is a bit hard for me to suspend disbelief in a contemporary.

I still enjoyed the story, but didn’t find the HEA believable.

(3.5 stars)

Notes: Sierra and Jake are both Canadians of East Asian descent. Takes place in Toronto, Canada
