A condensed, but very informative (and at turns fun) graphic novel about WWI. Though Hale lightens the mood with jokes, it is of course a chilling tale and not for sensitive tikes. He did a nice job keeping things as simple as possible while giving the seriousness of the topic due respect.

I think Hale bit off a bit more than what can be contained in a graphic novel of this size. He admits that (or the research babies do) at the end. Each battle seemed like one more confusing plot point with thousands, if not millions, of lives lost. So, in terms of getting a snapshot of the devastating magnitude of loss in WWI, yes, this graphic novel was brilliant. I just wanted a bit of time to breathe before the next massive loss of life.
I appreciated the use of animals to portray all the different countries/moving parts of WWI. I learned the difference between nationalism and patriotism too, a lesson that is sorely needed in our current times.
I love Hale's works and I am recommending them to everyone with elementary aged children. This particular volume is my son's favorite (mostly because of the animals) but the complexity of the story was a bit much for me. I am glad he chose WWI because it is so eclipsed by WWII. And I appreciate that he was critical of America's involvement (or lack thereof). Patriotism, not nationalism.

3.5 Stars. Holy Moly. This book did a great job of capturing the scope of loss during the war. I'm not one for reading about battle after battle, but this would absolutely appeal to the young history buff.

Join Nathanial Hale for another adventure through history. This time he will take the reader on an adventure through the events of WWI. You'll learn about famous battles, technological developments, and world leaders.

In my opinion, this book is a fantastic way to learn about WWI history. While you won't learn every detail, you will skim the surface of the major parties and events involved in WWI history. This graphic novel presents factual information in a fun-to-read graphic format that kids (and parents!) will enjoy.

Not a war buff by any means at all, but this one might go down as my favorite in the collection. It’s well done, smart, and synthesizes such complex material that I walked away feeling like I had a greater understanding of WWI. Although it’s geared towards children, I think all historians would enjoy this read.

I’m sure I learned it before but forgot: more than 9 million soldiers died in WW1. Wow. This tale gives a nice overview of the players (i.e., countries) and how it all went down.
