This was both an incredibly frustrating and sad read whilst also being unfortunately relatable for most women in the world.

Kim jiyoung is a woman who represented all women in Korea, but also the world. Where more often than not they would have to give up their livelihoods and dreams to follow the norm in society of being the perfect housewife to their husband. Even if they don’t have children women in Korea are especially disadvantaged with many of them earning much less than their male counterparts and many of them lacking job stability due to the idea that they could have a child at any point and become useless to the company.

When you get to the end it turns out the book is separated into chapters of her entire life, such as childhood, teenage years, young adulthood. And it is revealed that what we were reading where therapist notes on jiyoung, as the sadness in giving up her life and dreams and living a fruitless life had given her depression. She feels judged by those who don’t understand how hard she works to keep on top of everything, often being called a freeloader when all she ever wanted to do was life her own life as well.

Her male doctor who prescribed her with postnatal depression seems to finally understand how different it is to be a woman in Korea thanks to jiyoung and the issues his own wife faced. Until a female colleague of his has to quit due to childcare related issues and the book ends with “I’ll have to make sure her replacement is unmarried”

Thus the cycle begins again.
Extremely maddening book as this still happens today.
