This book detailed the life of a woman in South Korea. Through research and storytelling, the author was able to display the inequalities women experience in South Korea. This was shown throughout Jiyoung’s life. Women in South Korea, and even across the world, will experience unfair discrimination/treatment throughout their life. Instead of others noticing this and taking action, they would rather take advantage of this patriarchal system. I really enjoyed this book. It also allowed me to see other behaviors for what they are, instead of making excuse such as “boys will be boys.”

I believe this is one of those controversial pieces that stirred a lot of discussion in South Korea. There were multiple celebrities both scrutinized and criticized for announcing that they had read it simply due to its content– content I believe is only daily life anyway.

Very interesting to see it all laid out, but even more interesting to know that it is non-fiction turned more digestible with a fiction presentation, if that makes sense.

It is very frustrating to read through it, even more so knowing that many experience the same that Jiyoung had.

Expresses — so effectively through lived experiences within a short amount of pages — the kinds of inequities women face in South Korea (and in so many other places in the world) in some ways I didn’t even think to challenge. Big fan.

This book was decent. A story of a Korean woman growing up and how the culture views women in general.
