I had high hopes because the premise is so interesting to me but it felt predictable and fell flat.

I thought this book built up emotions very well and was a really interesting and melancholy look at the past of the main character Mila, and how she comes to find a home in her chosen family.

A quiet, introspective, and somber kind of book that is beautifully written and very atmospheric. It almost felt like an extended short story, making a very quick read but also one that makes you want to read slowly. Although it was slightly repetitive at times, and I think it could have benefitted from another few pages, I really enjoyed reading this! LaCour's prose gets more and more lovely with each book.

I'm honestly not sure if I liked this or not...I ended up slightly confused but also kinda emotional? I think I'd need to reread it to get a grip on how I feel about it & it's super quick so it'd be worth it in my opinion, but I'm going to let it sit for a while... lol I felt so uneasy right after finishing it! I definitely think there are deeper things here, I just can't pinpoint them at the moment.
