4.5 stars rounded to 5 - I loved this story and each of the characters in it. “Emotionally resonant literature” and family dysfunction at its finest (and totally my jam).

4.5 out of 5 stars. Slow start, but a strong ending. It took me about 40 percent in to really get into it. It does a good job of discussing how trauma shows up over generations in families. A good book about forgiveness and redemption.

Favorite quote that does a good job of summing up the book: “We repeat what we don’t repair.”

4.25/5. Reading this story made me feel like I am reading about someone’s real life throughout the years. At first when I picked it up, I didn’t understand where this book was headed but I liked it nonetheless. Overall, this book is just about pain, love, and most of all forgiveness. I don’t remember if I have ever read a book that is about forgiveness and I am so glad that I read it. The story feels so real. The characters feel so real and the author did an amazing job at making the readers feel that way. It reminded me that life isn’t black and white. The character development of each one of them is amazing, especially Francis and Anne’s. I’m happy for her especially. My fave character is George. This book didn’t make me feel bored (it took me four days to read because I was just lazy and wanted to watch YouTube videos). So yeah.

Also, I loved the representation of being an alcoholic and its effects to your family. I recognized some things similar to my own experiences.

A book of second chances! These two families had their issues but were able to overcome the hardships. Besides the central incident, there’s no unnecessary angst, or over the top drama. This story of how love and compassion and communication can solve most issues was so good!

This was a fine read, but I really didn’t like the ending.
