Cute, little too fast paced for my taste.

I found a slice of my childhood that was long lost and was assumed never to be found again.

Like the infinite treasure of the dwarves that Smaug stole, only to be found and restored with the help of Bilbo Baggins.

This book has been a journey. Well, the second one in fact. I had read it long ago and had fallen in love with Tolkien's writing style. I longed to become a Hobbit - Bilbo Baggins of Bag-End of the Shire. To go on an adventure through Rivendell, crossing the Misty Mountains, through the Old Forest Road, and into the Lonely Mountain overlooking the Long Lake Esgaroth.

The Hobbit is a turning point in my reading journey. It is my first tryst with fantasy fiction - a genre I was never interested in. Now I long to live in the Tolkienverse where good will ultimately win over evil, albeit amidst some struggle.

Forever a Tolkein fan.

A classic but... Tolkien's writing is very plot centered instead of being driven by internal conflict. It is brought up for the main protagonist in the beginning, end, and occasional narration but is never seen always told. The other characters aren't really given a reason for their actions or how they are a part of the journey other than duty. The plot is clear (once 20th century language style is compensated for), but you don't feel as if you know or have a reason to care about the characters or their goal. The novel forever changed fantasy but made you care more about the world than the characters in it.

The Hobbit is a well constructed story that starts out in a hole. A Hobbit hole. It reads easily and takes you away through the countryside as Bilbo Baggins is taken on an adventure he doesn't want to be on. Bilbo is a Hobbit set in his ways that discovers there is much more to him than he first thinks.

I loved reading this book. I read it first when I was 13 and it was incredible then but reading again now in my twenties I read different things in the story. It is still incredible and I still love it.
