I liked the first and second books in this series, but together they don't weigh enough on the positive side to make me interested in finishing the last book. I wish these books were more subversive and surprising. They kind of plod along and besides the slight feminist twist, I'm not really enjoying them wholly.

Exciting and engaging. I couldn't put it down. Stood up as the second in the series and I can't wait for the third installment. I continued to enjoy the story shifting perspectives and the battle scenes are written beautifully.

unfortunately i didn’t love this as much as the half-drowned king. svanhild is undoubtedly the best and most compelling character, her struggles and concerns so unique, but her story didn’t move fast or far enough for me, and was bogged down by other less interesting viewpoints. her brother ragnvald oscillates between being morally torn and kind of dumb. i’d have much preferred a book just about svanhild, the sea queen, sailing to distant exotic lands with solvi, and their adventures there.
