Exciting and engaging. I couldn't put it down. Stood up as the second in the series and I can't wait for the third installment. I continued to enjoy the story shifting perspectives and the battle scenes are written beautifully.

unfortunately i didn’t love this as much as the half-drowned king. svanhild is undoubtedly the best and most compelling character, her struggles and concerns so unique, but her story didn’t move fast or far enough for me, and was bogged down by other less interesting viewpoints. her brother ragnvald oscillates between being morally torn and kind of dumb. i’d have much preferred a book just about svanhild, the sea queen, sailing to distant exotic lands with solvi, and their adventures there.

Excellent continuation. Plunges the reader further into the social political world of viking and Norse culture as it also sprinkles in mentions to the broader ancient world. Political, power, and gender dynamics along with the concept of family, fidelity, oath, and duty are all richly explored. Ritual and routine, an absolutely solid world building and prime character development.

I really enjoyed the first book of this series. I thought the characters had strong motivations, and their actions made sense. This book I tried so hard to like, but the story came off more like a soap opera.

I strongly recommend this series to those who enjoy meaty, realistic historical fiction, with flawed, sympathetic characters who behave in ways appropriate to the time period and plenty of seafaring action. Suggest to fans of Bernard Cornwell's The Last Kingdom.
