The Spike/Drusilla story was a bit random, but I really enjoyed The Origin! I know lots of people complained but I love that they decided to keep Dawn for the early stories.

i don’t know how to add a review to my december reread instead of my may first-time read because this app sucks but i wanted to note that this was a fun reread now that i’m watching the show; all the backstory makes sense and i actually know who giles and angel are etc etc. i will say that only ⅓ of the comics actually capture sarah michelle gellar’s likeness (not that they HAVE to but still it’s more fun that way) and many of these writers/artists/storyboarders seem to have major issues drawing a continuous story bc so many panels make huge leaps that don’t make sense and require rereading to be able to understand what’s happening… and that’s NOT even in the rapid-fire action scenes, that’s in just like regular scenes. oy. but the dialogue in this is just delicious— SO nineties (“just cause you’re having a full-on wiggins,” “get out of my FACIAL!”)— and this was fun enough to read twice, for SURE!

Fun and a good overview of Buffy's history, especially for us Buffy fans. :) The Giles storyline is especially interesting. Ready for the next couple of Volumes!

Read for Book Roast's Charms Extra Credit Readathon. Spell: Lumos - Book with a light cover

Her name is Buffy Summers. She is the Slayer. Each generation one is born - to slay vampires and demons and whatnot.

All things considered? She'd rather be somewhere else.

Okay, this was SUPER fun. Exempting that first chapter.

This is the start of the Buffy comics, subtracting a few that are explained in the introduction. Skipping over the truly dreadful Spike and Drusilla volume (who the hell drew that and why have they never seen Juliet Landau either in or out of vamp makeup?), we start with the origin of Buffy.

AKA What the Buffy movie was supposed to be.

I am one of the three people in the known universe who actually liked the movie, but this is the movie without the creepy period cramp warning signs. The humor is still there, but the horror element is 100 times sharper. Extremely enjoyable.

Though we do miss out on Pee Wee and his incredibly drawn out death scene.

From there, we jump to Buffy and Pike hitting Las Vegas, and the explanation for what happened to him.

We also see how Giles got picked to be Buffy's watcher, and what really happened when Buffy was sent to the institution seen in Normal Again.

The best story was Dawn and the teddy bear. No spoilers, but I have to admit, that ending made me a little sad.

Seriously, though, the Spike and Dru chapter was fucking dreadful.

To be fair, graphic novels aren't really my 'thing', but I thought this was a pretty good collection.

Even though "The Origin" is the only canonical story in the volume, I still enjoyed the other stories.

5*

We're talking about my most favorite TV show EVER so I am bound to love it.

Well, I don't love love it but it is Buffy and it is canon, pre-Sunnydale and it gives us another insight as to who Buffy was and how she was before she came to Sunnydale. I kinda like that Dawn has been incorporated in there since "the beginning" but it rings a little less true... kinda, but it is still pretty good considering that everyone's memories have been altered in season 5 and Dawn became part of the new reality. Maybe it would have felt weirder had they not included her in the origin stories? I don't know.

The fact every story gives different looks to the characters feels a little bit weird BUT I don't dislike it at all since every artist gave his/her idea as to how the characters look like. And I like that, in the comics, they incorporated demon looking beasties with the vampires. Like green skinned, long ears and red eyes types... you know?!

Overall I really really liked this one. I am giving it a full 5*, which is rare I do this. I may be a bit biased but... what can I say. Anything Buffy will have me want to get it, no matter what, and I will enjoy it completely.
