I loved 75% of this, but I found one of the longer stories, Viva Las Buffy!, extremely hard to follow. That is why I am only giving this 3 stars. The story flipped back and forth between the perspectives of Buffy, Pike, and Angelus while trying to balance multiple story-lines and I was confused for most of it.

I'm also not sure why this started with a story about Spike and Dru. I could not care any less about them than I already do so I was mostly uninterested throughout.

Buffy: The Origin and Slayer, Interrupted were awesome comics though. I loved seeing the original movie in comic form. The artwork in both was great, but Slayer, Interrupted was definitely my favorite.

This wasn't what I thought it would be. I thought it was the Season 8 graphic series, but it doesn't seem to be. Rather it's (mostly) the story of the original movie as Joss Whedon wanted it to be. I haven't seen the movie. This is a good story, though, and Buffy does in fact burn down the gym. However, it ends with her feeling quite determined about being the slayer, which doesn't square with the beginning of Season 1. Also, Dawn is in it, so it's apparently a retcon from at least after Season 5. I know, once she existed, she had always existed, but the narrative is a bit twisty there. Still, she was rather cute in this so I didn't mind her. Also apparently Dawn has always been a bit immature. A ten-year-old wouldn't be that into a teddy bear, would she? I don't know, I can't remember anymore.

All's Fair - 2/5
Buffy: The Origin - 4/5
Viva Las Buffy - 3/5
Dawn and Hoopy Bear - 3/5
Slayer, Interrupted - 4/5
Overall - 4/5

I'm not really interested in the Spike and Dru story so All's Fair was a little boring for me. ...Viva Las Buffy was hard to follow at times, especially the Angel story line! Dawn and Hoopy Bear was just ok, but it's short so it didn't outstay it's welcome.

Buffy: The Origin and Slayer, Interupted were great. These are the two longest stories in the omnibus so they kind of out weigh the others for me and make this book worth it.

I enjoyed this one a lot. I could not put it down. I'm relatively new to the comic book world and really Buffy and Angel are the only comics I buy.

I'm happy that the people at Dark Horse have put together these omnibuses because when these had originally come out I either wasn't interested or didn't know they were available. So it's nice to be able to get all those comics in the 7 volumes that are out there.

Now onto the more specific review. The first comic with Spike and Dru I wasn't that entertained with. It was all right but nothing that stood out. However I loved Buffy: The Origin, it's nice to see what Joss intended to be the movie.

Viva Las Buffy was good, a little bit of a let down after Origin but still good. I don't know how I feel about Angel being involved in that story line though. Dawn and the Hoopy Bear, I know there are some people who didn't enjoy it because technically Dawn wasn't there in that time period but I thought it was a cute and funny story.

Also liked Slayer Interrupted, I always (at least after Normal Again) wanted to see Buffy's experience of being in an institution after being called. Although I don't 100% believe that this was the way that experience went down but still a good comic.

Overall a good omnibus, good artwork and it made me eager to read the next omnibus.

A few typos, but I really enjoyed the art throughout. Very cool to see some more Buffy back-story and how she, and her family, came to be how they are introduced in the TV series.

I have a soft spot for the Buffy comics for two reasons: 1) I like the show to an embarrassing degree and 2) I was an assistant editor on the comics (in fact, I'm credited with that in this volume though I don't think I actually worked on any of the issues in this collection -- they all came before or after my time on the title).

Anyway, I liked this collection. They are good comics. Not great, but good. They capture something of the spirit of the show even if they can't quite capture the show's economy of action, dialog, characterization, etc. The best issues are those written Joe Casey and Fabian Nicieza. That's a good thing since they wrote most of the stories here. Cliff Richards handles the art on the bulk of the stories and I always found his art workman-like, if somewhat uninspired. He captures the likenesses of the actors very well.

If you're a fan of comics and of the Buffy TV show, you should probably check out this collection. If you're not a fan of those two things, then you should probably stay away.
