Cute, fun read. Not a page turner, but I did enjoy reading the children's thoughts.

This is the edition I have in the library. The second book was even better than the first. Brilliant, original writing. I can think of a couple of kids at school who will enjoy this book. And now I'm going to have to find the remaining 6 because I need to know what happens next and I suspect the kids who read this will want to read the rest of them too.

There is some great whimsy here, but I had no idea Mary Poppins was so vain and so mean!

I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first, but it was still a good book. I hate the endings when Mary leaves especially since there was no sense of hope at the end of this one that Mary might return. I did however appreciate the merry-go-round being the way Mary left.

I completely understand the charm of these books. The imaginative adventures that Jane and Michael go on when Mary Poppins is around are wonderful, and I'd love to imagine I were those kids going to star parties, floating in the air with a balloon, and turning upside down in mid-air.

However, Mary Poppins secrecy, denial, and downright anger when the children want to talk about their adventures with her got real old. I don't think much of her as a nanny, and I disapprove of the way she has Jane and Michael and the twins (and me, as the reader) in tenterhooks about her moods and directives. Toward the end, I often skimmed through so much of the whimsical detail, just to get further along, since I didn't want to read about Mary anymore.

I don't plan on reading any other books in the series.

I haven't seen the Disney movie of Mary Poppins since I was a very small child, so I can't say how the film version compares to this novel. But I'm not exaggerating when I say that the Mary Poppins of the original book is a mean bully who berates, gaslights, and straight-up steals from the children under her care. I'll grant that they seem to love her in spite of her cruelty, but this reader did not. (Maybe I'm just not cut out for this sort of story -- I also take the side of the fish in The Cat in the Hat, protesting that that stranger-danger feline should not be there when your mother is out.) Mary Poppins is a strange fey being, and the adventures she provides are fairly inventive. But I just couldn't get past how awful she was as a person.
