This was such a lovely book. I've watched the movie before when I was a kid and always loved it. I didn't realize it was based on a book until recently. I love Mary Poppin's character in how she is so selfless and does what needs to be taken care of for the benefit of the kids. Even for her birthday, it was an idea the kids had - not necessarily what she wanted. This is a book I would definitely read to my children some day. It is timeless for sure <3

I think I loved this because I pictured Julie Andrews the entire time. She was surprisingly not as charming as I wanted her to be. I think the whimsy of her character was definitely developed more in the film, but the world Travers has created is charming.

Mary Poppins... Now how do I begin to talk about Mary Poppins?
It's a wonderful book and a perfect children's classic that everyone should read.

(I heard her hair is insured for 10000£)

The first moment I saw this BEAUTIFUL edition of Mary Poppins I knew I had to have it. I hadn't read Mary Poppins yet tho, but it was a perfect opportunity. After a few trips to the bookstore and stealing glances from it, this last Monday I finally bought it and started reading it right away.

Mary Poppins is certainly more vain and less smiley than Julie Andrews' Mary, but that doesn't make her any less of an interesting character. It's pretty obvious to the reader she's like that only as an act and that she cares very much for the kids in her care. Tho, her vanity is no act, she's so pretty she almost kisses herself (betcha modern day Mary P would LOOOOVE "Uptown Funk").

The writing is your typical children's classic writing: easy, smooth and with a kind of fantasy you only find in children's classics (shame about that). I love the whole storytelling-tone of it, I'm a sucker for books written with that tone, they're the best. As soon as I started reading Mary Poppins a smile crept up to my face "Yes, this is my jam!".

The only sucky part? Not having the rest of MP's books cuz I wanna read more of her!!

PS: The illustrations are wonderful as well, they're by a Portuguese artist and they're just super lovely ok?

I managed to read to page 90~ but had to put it down because of the casual gas lighting of Jane and Michael. It follows this pattern of going on a magical day trip/ event (see Mr Wigg early on) and when the children ask follow up questions Mary Poppins proceeds to deny the event ever happened, making the children doubt themselves.
I will reiterate what other community members have written: this book is not the film. Mary Poppins is a very different character in the book.

There was magic in the imagination of this author but my fond memories of the Mary Poppins I knew growing up ruined this much starchier and unpleasant Mary Poppins for me.

Well...this was a bit disappointing to be honest. It turns out that this is the extremely rare case where I enjoy the movie more than the book it was based on. It's also a rare case where I really don't care to continue the series.

There is a good magical component and some very good imagination in the tales, but I had a hard time connecting. The chapters act as short stories rather than a continuing tale. There isn't a lot of transition for a cohesive story and everything instead felt very disjointed. Perhaps the worst thing was that I really did not like Mary Poppins herself. She is nothing like her movie counterpart, but instead is mostly grumpy, short with the children, and quite standoffish. Had she been more like the Disney version, I likely would have enjoyed the book more. It wasn't an awful book, but I'm just let down by my overall experience with it.

Somehow I missed reading this in my childhood. And Mary Poppins is not quite the fun and carefree nanny portrayed by Walt Disney and Julie Andrews. There are some dark spots here. I actually preferred the movie, probably because I saw it before reading the book.

Some of the tales were charming, some closer to tedious. But I am older than the target audience, so this wasn't meant for me, anyway. I probably would have loved Mary Poppins when I was a child, just as I loved the Oz books.
