A bit like watching a soap opera, but in a good way.

I'd first like to point out that our the main character of Read Me Like A Book has a great name ;)

I loved what Liz Kessler did with this novel. At its core is a girl coming to terms with her sexuality, but beyond that it highlights some of the struggles we face in our later teenage years as we near adulthood and realise quite how scary it is being responsible for yourself. But it also offers some reassurance that, despite how scary things can seem, people can be awesome and things can work out for the better. Read Me Like A Book explores friendships, families and bullying too.

This is a great addition to YA bookshelves, made all the better by being an LGBT+ novel at that. Recommended.

When I saw this book on the shelf I knew I just had to read it. Not only was I already informed of Kessler's amazing literature, from reading her books as a child, but it was as if this book called out to me. Screaming "READ ME" and I am so glad I listened.
I feel I can relate so much with Ashleigh, while reading this book I couldn't put it down, it was as if I could see parts of myself in her.
I may be younger than Ashleigh is but I admire her and when I finally reached the last chapter I didn't want it to end!
Thank you Liz

Rating:★★★★

A coming-out story that explores the depths of heterosexual and homosexual relationships at a teen level. This book depicts the confusion that sexuality can cause perfectly. Though I’m not sure I can appreciate the student teacher relationship connotations, these are only subtle and works within the narrative. Ashleigh is also struggling with her choices for the future and not knowing which university to apply for. She also has to combat dealing with finding herself while her current self also has friendships and a relationship to maintain.

Firstly, I want to say that while this book had a premise that it could have been a little off putting for some readers, it wasn't.
A coming of age story about a teenager who's going through a lot: parents fighting, losing friends, bad grades and figuring out where she wants to be in life, and coming to terms with her sexuality amidst all of this.
Some of the end of the book came off as a little cliche for me, and there weren't any 'wow' moments for me, however, there wasn't a time I needed a break. It read kind of like a dramatized TV series, not great, not bad.
