SPOILERS WITHIN!

One of my favorite books in this series! This book was filled with such intrigue and unrelenting mystery that I had a hard time putting it down.

I am so sad that Henrik died. He was one of my favorite characters. Enigmatic, but always there when Cotton needed him.

Hopefully we will get a little Cassiopeia Vitt in the next book. Two books without her is no bueno.

Not one of my favorite Cotton Malone books. The split between Cotton and Henrik bothered me a lot. The embedded history was good, as always, though, and I'm still a fan.

Not my favorite outing for Cotton Malone so far, but it's a decent read. Feels like a new set of associates for the retired agent are coming on board. It's a game changer for some characters (won't spoil it here). Not at the top of my list, but on to the next.

This wasn't my favourite in the series so far. It was so focused on Thorvaldsen's revenge that the mystery and the historical item that was being found took a back seat (maybe it was even in the trunk, that's how far back the seat was). One of the historial items that seemed to be very important (a codex that can predict the future) didn't even appear again until close to the end of the book. Then the end of the book, we seemed to have just swapped one character for a younger, poorer version. Hopefully the next in the series goes back to the historical item at the centre of the mystery.

Why do I keep reading these? Best thing I can say about this is that the author wasn't afraid to kill off a main character.

2019’s Around the year in52 books: 19. A book by an author who has more than one book on your TBR

This one is about Napoleon, a secret treasure, an Illuminati like group —the Paris club— that influences world events for financial gain, and Thorvaldsen’s vendetta against the man responsible for his son murder.

Spoiler

The club was after Napoleon’s treasure. Thorvaldsen dies, killed by Ashby, the man he wanted to kill. He had a falling out with Malone, they never got the chance to make peace, that was sad.

Something was missing, I wasn’t as interested in this story as the others I’ve read, I’m reading them in order of publication. It is entertaining and fast paced but I wasn’t invested in it and I can’t pin point what, but something was off. Still if the premise is appealing to you, I recommend it.

It's a fun romp book - moves fairly smoothly, although the jumps between characters at the end were a bit too quick and jolting and distracted me. A couple of character turns that surprised me, so that was definitely something. I did feel like it was a bit flatter than the other books in this series, though.

Good for the commute, which is exactly why I bought it.
