I bought this book a few years ago but only read it now because I'm an insufferable hoarder. I'm glad I waited because my understanding of theoretical language is more rigid. And not to mention my appreciation of food is more obsessive. I've come a long way since I bought this book in 2015.
Gourmet Rhapsody follows the structure of Monsieur Arthens' culinary memories. Enshrouded by his genius, told in his perspectives, and of the people that surround him, the novel touches upon the foundations of food appreciation. From bread to wine to stews and sorbets, Arthens has an anecdote to say about it.
I enjoyed the rhapsodizing about food—pretty much the only rhapsodizing I can tolerate. To follow the genius of a food writer, it ensures some kind of neurosis in their private life. Monsieur Arthens is no exception. He's a useless husband and father, but I guess it's okay because he's such a great writer and foodie.
My favourite part? The chapter on bread.

Pas aussi agréable à lire que L’élégance de l’hérisson. J’ai eu du mal à me rapprocher des personnages. Peut être qu’un jour j’y retournerai et je changerai d’avis.
it would be a very difficult task to live up to the amazing quality of Hedgehog. that book was special in its characters, plot, insights...it was nearly perfect.
this book was enjoyable. as a "foodie" i think i enjoyed it more than others would, the mouthwatering descriptions of meals past described by the dying food critic were beautiful. Barbery has a way with describing food (in both this and Hedgehog) that is very enticing.
what this book lacked, for me, was the strong bond that i developed to the characters in her other novel. i never quite got there with Pierre Athens. his stories of both child and adulthood are well written, but i just didn't feel the deep connection i did in the other book.
i think there was less "story" here...less substance than i expected. but it was a generally pleasant read, and it made me hungry! Barbery is a talented author and, i suspect, a grande food lover! i like her.

Sort of a sequel to Elegance of the Hedgehog with a focus on the food critic before he passes. Well written with some memorable lines.
A frippery that got published in English because of the success of Barbery's later work. Not bad though.

Je pensais pas pleurer pour un livre sur la nourriture, et pourtant j’ai l’impression qu’il a été écrit pour moi
Beautifully written story with descriptions so accurate that they made me feel like I was biting into a tomato or just made me hungry. The characters were developed through their telling of the main character who in the grand scheme of things was basically the only character. Through his descriptions of memories of flavors of food, you could tell that he missed the people he has loved throughout his life. Out of all the different gourmet foods he had tasted throughout the years, he most desired the supermarket version of a pastry, a chouquette. He missed a memory, more than anything, of happier days. I truly give it 4.75 stars.

I love Barbery's other book so much but I can only take so much purple prose and I wanted to skip through the entire thing
