This was Very Cute

I liked the artwork and characters in this book. Brianna was very cute. There were a few typos but it wasn't that distracting.

Brianna has to prove that she is an awesome chef, and so proceeds to do that in a city full of monsters!

I came across this comic through another comic I was reading, I just had to try it out and I am so so happy I did. This was too much fun. I do adore comics about cooking, especially when they add something extra to the mix. Like this one has monsters, or with Space Battle Lunchtime and aliens.

Brianna's father is a big name in the cooking world, and he has set up a contest. Brianna and her brothers will have to compete. One of them can use his last name! Something that will surely help with making people come to a restaurant. All her brothers are immediately interesting, but Brianna worries. She isn't used to working at a restaurant + she has to find a place that isn't too expensive. I loved that while she was worrying, she didn't just give up. She went to search for a place and found one in a very special place. Which had me squeeing. Come on, a city full with monsters? All living, relatively, happy together? Oh yes!

And at first Brianna's restaurant starts off well, but she quickly learns there are some rules in place... the monsters CANNOT eat certain ingredients (because humans are ick). You can imagine that Brianna goes in a tizzy, but then decides to lie and go on with what she is doing. Which sounds a bit rude, but I can imagine that she will continue, especially since so many people are coming for her specialities. They don't want those boring other foods or monster foods, they want burgers. They want fries! And trying to make those without those ingredients... well... not working. So you can imagine the choice Brianna made. And it showed in her restaurant. All the monsters loved her food!

I also quite liked, well maybe liked is the wrong word, more that it made her more real and made you really root for the girl, that you could also see that not everything went easy for this girl. She had some dark thoughts at time that often would overload her. But we can also see that she is able to dispel those bad thoughts and just keep trying.

Suzan, the harpy girl who is helping out Brianna with her restaurant. I have to say that in the beginning I didn't like her that much. For a whole load of reasons. Sorry, I used to quite be interested in grumpy characters, but lately I just can't like them. But later on I started liking her more and more. Plus it seemed that all she needed was a bit love and attention for her to bloom.

Kevin, the guy who keeps popping up and eventually becomes just as much a part of the restaurant as Suzan. I liked him from the start, and was happy that he became a permanent fixture in the story.

There is also a baddie in the story, why wouldn't there be. :P I really didn't like the old crone. Just let people be people. I get that you are probably worried no one will come to your restaurant, but seriously? I am sure people will still visit yours if they are in the need for some fancy smancy monster food. I just didn't like how she kept trying to find something to destroy Brianna's dreams with. Evidence/proof/witnesses, anything really. *sighs* I also feel sorry for her assistant. I can't imagine what kind of hell that is to work with the old woman.

I liked the food contest against Brianna's brother (I still think it is cheating that he is doing the restaurant thing like this), and also the final battle against the old crone.

I am a bit sad that the comics don't seem to continue any further. I would have loved to see more Brianna. Maybe see more of her relationship with her dad and her brothers. But also see her expand her restaurant and make more different recipes!

Oh, lastly, the art was quite fun!

All in all, this is one comic I would recommend to everyone looking for a fun, monsterific comic with cooking.

Read for Book Roast's Magical Readathon: NEWTs Exams. Subject: Brave Chef Brianna, A Level. (Book that ends on an even page)

Dear god, this was so freaking adorable.

Brianna's dad is an uber famous chef who seems to be dying. He's got an enormous legacy to leave to his 15 sons and one daughter, so he instructs them to take their not insubstantial funds and open restaurants all around the world. Whoever succeeds will take over the family business.

Brianna takes her talent to Monster City, where flour and sugar are illegal and meat is never to be cooked. After winning over the residents to her cooking, she fights her own self doubt and anxiety and works hard to make a winning restaurant that will make her father proud.

I loved almost everything about this story. The art style is fun and beautiful, the characters are fun and multi dimensional. The food sounds freaking delicious.

My one complaint is with our 'villain', a rival chef who hates humans and wants to take Brianna down at all costs. She isn't just another chef who is jealous of the attention. She's been around since Monster City's conception, when they formed their town to be away from humans who treated them like dirt because they were different.

We didn't really address those issues? I would've liked some form of resolution there, with Brianna and Madame coming to some sort of grudging respect. It was mostly brushed over, and that seems very unfair.

Other than that, though, this is a sweet and solid story.

Hm. Yikes.

The art in this way pretty and I liked the character designs (specially of the monsters). Brianna’s anxiety was also well depicted, even if it left me a bit anxious as well. But overall this story has this undercurrent of racism and gentrification that really sours the whole thing. Brianna, a rich white blonde, comes into this city full of marginalized people and immediately disregards all their laws for personal gain. The person who calls her out on that (who’s the character with the darker skin tone in the book, might I add) is painted as the villain, even if what she’s saying is right. So… no, I don’t recommend this.

Brianna’s ailing father, a renowned chef, challenges Brianna and her 15 older brothers to each establish a successful restaurant and inherit the family name and reputation. Brianna has only just graduated from culinary school so, broke and unestablished anywhere, she ends up in Monster City where rent is cheap. But how welcoming will monsters be to human cuisine?

I grabbed this on a whim as I was prowling through my library’s shelves last week. Who can resist a bright and cheerful cover that also portrays monsters? Not me.

This was really cute and contained important messages about friendship; overcoming self-doubt; and living for your own ideals of happiness, not those dictated by someone else.

Brianna was a well-developed character who looks sweet on the outside but who is plagued by demons of self-doubt that make her lash out at others. She’s in a stressful situation and the youngest in a family of thirteen. It’s understandable. But she learns her lessons and makes her apologies and tries to grow and be a better person. The supporting characters also showed growth and they were a lot of fun to read about as well.

The illustrations are beautifully done in the same style as the cover. I loved looking at the monsters and seeing them contrasted against Brianna’s cute little cafe.

This is a standalone graphic novel as far as I can tell. I enjoyed it so much that I’m slightly disappointed.

I highly recommend this for readers who struggle with their own self-doubt and especially for anyone who is as drawn to that cute cover as I am. For those who enjoy cooking, there are even four recipes from the book included at the end.

A cute story about a young woman opening a restaurant as a human in monster city. The art is nice, the characters entertaining and the monsters...not so monstrous. It was a quick fun read; I liked it.

Cute story and art!

Didn’t love the motivation behind Brianna and why she chooses to open a restaurant? But the rest of the story was sweet.

Wonderful little all ages comic, wholesome and a refreshingly realistic depiction of mental health with a plus size lead. Needless to say I definitely see myself represented in this one and is worth reading for that aspect alone. I just really wish it was a little longer, I wanted to see more things fleshed out that just didn't have time to in a for issue comic. I would even love to see more stories set in Monster City seeing as Brianna's story has been seen to its end.

Also loved finding the various Easter eggs peppered in this book everywhere, it felt like a Lil nerdy scavenger hunt
