Interesting bit of history, although some of the spreads (the tall tales) seemed unnecessary. Photograph and timeline in back matter were helpful. Students appeared interested.

A biography that will be well read because of the topic it covers!

This is a fun story about Henson Gregory, the undisputed inventor of the doughnut.  The book gives basic facts about his sailing life and the story, according to him, of how and why he invented doughnuts.  It also identifies a few of the more exciting myths around the invention.  Final notes not part of the picture book include information about his family, National Doughnut Day, and how he came to be the UNDISPUTED inventor.  Illustrations are colorful and well-done, as one would expect from Kirsch.

This is a genre-bending informative book told like a story. Beautiful illustrations and the kids have been really excited to read it!

What a delicious book!

The design of the book fits right in with its subject matter - a circle of illustration on each spread. I appreciate how the author acknowledged the legends that sprang up around the creation of the doughnut. An author's note gives additional information about Hanson Gregory and the debate over who REALLY invented the doughnut. Back matter includes a timeline, a photo of Hanson Gregory, and selected bibliography.
