Great overview of the invention of the doughnut, addresses the reality and legends which gives a nice contrast. Illustrations are bold and humorous.

The illustrations remind me a bit of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Fractured Fairytales. The story is succinct and informative. I do wish there was a recipe included (because really, who *wouldn't* want to make doughnuts after reading this?), but otherwise I appreciated learning about Captain Gregory from Maine.

I very much enjoyed this picture book biography of Hanson Gregory; the inventor of the doughnut! It read like a picture book with excellent circle-inspired illustrations. (Berry loved the doughnut endpapers.) There is a lot of history: information on ships and sailing, Gregory's personal story, and the evolution of baking (sinkers and doughnuts, at least) while at sea. I also loved the additional biographical information at the end. Did you know that Dunkin Donuts paid for a replacement headstone after Gregory's was stolen? How appropriate! :D

BUT. Why are they called doughnuts?! After all of the discussion of sinkers (the predecessor to the doughnut) and why they were called by that name and the entire book being about doughnuts, there is NO mention of where the term doughnut came from.

Cute book, learned the story behind the doughnut as well as a couple stories that aren't true. It was ok.
