The second person perspective wasn’t for me and the plot was just confusing.

The story was really interesting, and the characters colourful and had real depth. It was difficult to follow at times with all the characters intertwining, but the lead up to the last moon and the beyond was worth it. I enjoyed it, learning about the history of Sri Lanka, but felt like it was easy to get lost in, and not in an escapism kind of way.

book club 2.0 Aug 2023. unusual book. Glad that I read it. I knew nothing about Sri Lanka or the people of that area. I now have a very small bit of knowledge. The country has been at war with others and within by the different tribes/ethnic groups for so much of its history. The story of Maali and the 7 moons after his death is an interesting story that we would not necessarily hear in the US. The wandering/floating on the wind souls and their "interactions" with the living and the dead was a new way of thinking about spirits. Maali was terribly self-centered and hedonistic. His involvement with various military factions in order to document activity via photos could be perceived as other serving but I am not really sure. The mystery of how he died was a good twist that I did not really see coming but I was not too surprised. it is too bad that hatred of others who are different is so universal. Maybe Maali will be reborn as a leopard.
