The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida by Shehan Karunatilaka

3.0

book club 2.0 Aug 2023. unusual book. Glad that I read it. I knew nothing about Sri Lanka or the people of that area. I now have a very small bit of knowledge. The country has been at war with others and within by the different tribes/ethnic groups for so much of its history. The story of Maali and the 7 moons after his death is an interesting story that we would not necessarily hear in the US. The wandering/floating on the wind souls and their "interactions" with the living and the dead was a new way of thinking about spirits. Maali was terribly self-centered and hedonistic. His involvement with various military factions in order to document activity via photos could be perceived as other serving but I am not really sure. The mystery of how he died was a good twist that I did not really see coming but I was not too surprised. it is too bad that hatred of others who are different is so universal. Maybe Maali will be reborn as a leopard.
