Gorgeous art style paired with heavy and emotional storytelling of Something So Commonplace for black and other minorities dealing with. It's just one situation, a common one, and yet, so painful and raw to read it even as an outsider. An excellent read for those willing to evaluate racism and how it impacts past current and future generations.

A gorgeous book that explores all the subtle ways racism rears its ugly head in day to day life. Also a good examination of how trying to maintain neutrality is really just siding with those in power.

Maybe a little too 'parable-y' for me, but still recommended.

"Walking away from the person you love is never easy. But if that person refuses to see you for who you really are...if loving them means you have to silence yourself to please them...then that love is not worth it. You're worth more than that."

I randomly picked this book up in the graphic novel section of my library. I'm so glad I did. It's so beautiful and well written. It is so important to talk about racism that can exist in interracial relationships. Very powerful and very beautiful artwork! I'm so glad that Farai spoke up against her boyfriend and his parents.

Beautiful graphics and message. Farai is such a strong , intelligent, loving character. So glad she stood her ground and stood up for her and her family . Must read for all .

Really enjoyed this book and the highlights it puts on potential racial tension in family dynamics. I mainly wish it was longer, because it went by so quickly and I was so invested!
