Growing up in a country where the majority of people are muslim, I never got the treatment of what Asiyah and Faizah did. So it made me realise again and again that our muslim sisters often face those bad words or treatments just because they wear their hijab. So I'm glad this book exists to give the affirmations to young people. I hope through this book, our young sisters can gain a moral support to face these hardship and wear their hijab proudly.

“Asiyah's hijab isn't a laugh. Asiyah's hijab is like the ocean waving to they sky. It's always there, strong and friendly.”

A picture book from the perspective of a younger sister observing her older sister wearing a hijab to school for the first time. She sees the mean boys pointing and saying things but the beauty of her sister's hijab outshines them. A great story about being accepting of differences in others. Fun Fact: This book was written by an Olympic Medalist!

The Proudest Blue is about two sisters named Asiya and Faizah. The story is about Asiya's first day of wearing a hijab and the strength and beauty it brings. Some question Asiya and Faizah about her hijab, but their mother prepared them for the questions, hurtful comments, and stares. Faizah describes her older sister's hijab as the kind of blue that is the ocean and sky meeting. It is beautiful and loud, and Faizah wants to wear one just like it. I would have this in my classroom as a reminder to all of my students that everyone is different, and that is beautiful. Some cultures celebrate differently or have different traditions, but that is what makes them unique.
