Very meh. Teens saying goodbye as they head off to college. I felt like I was reading it just to read it, wasn't very engaged with it. I loved Field Notes on Love which was written later but this doesn't make me want to read more of Smith's backlist. I really wanted to read it before I watched the Netflix adaptation so I'm interested to see if I'll like it on screen better

A lovely contemporary read that takes place in the space of twelve hours and let you sees the ups and downs of a relationship on the brink of heading off to college.
The story takes place over a twelve hour period as high school sweethearts Clare and Aidan spend one last night together before they head off to college the next morning - Clare on the east coast at Dartmouth and Aidan on the west coast at UCLA. Over the course of the night, they take a trip down memory lane as they visit places around town - the school, the pizza place, the bowling alley, the beach - all the places where they shared special memories. It's a farewell tour that forces them to face the decision they've been putting off all summer - whether or not they should break up before heading off into the next chapter of their life; break up on their own terms or break up over silly misunderstandings and missed phone calls; break up now or break up later. It's a night to remember, filled with old memories, new memories, goodbyes, laughs and heartbreaks.
I loved this book so much! Clare and Aidan's last night before college was a roller-coaster of emotions and I just wanted them to make it! Journeying through the town and looking back at their many memoires together, I felt like I had known these characters for years, not just a couple hundred pages.
Scotty and Stella were also great characters in the story, and I wished we got more of them. The story is the same as any other YA contemporary, and yet it is still so different. I was laughing, and crying, and laughing some more and I loved where the story went along the way.
I admit, looking at the story overall, nothing really happens. It is literally looking at two people deciding whether or not they should break up while they travel around town, reliving their memories. I can see why some people didn't enjoy this book, but I feel that the story is what made it great. It was something that would actually happen. Yes, there isn't any major drama, but that's what makes it perfect. It was a real couple trying to decide their future on the eve of heading off to college, trying to deal with their friendships and family in the lead up to the next chapter in their lives.
I am so happy that Jennifer included a prologue and I know I wouldn't have been happy with how it ended. The prologue was perfect and I'm happy with how the story flowed and how it ended.
If you enjoy contemporary, I highly recommend this book to you. You'll be rooting for these characters, laughing with them, crying with them, and just experiencing what it's like to say goodbye to friends, family and partners as you head off to college.
