I really wanted to like this one more than I did. It taps into a similar mischievous kid vibe as Roald Dahl or Dav Pilkey who are both super popular in our house, but the challenge with those types of books is making sure your impish characters don't go too far. Unfortunately, I feel like in many cases this book does. Characters come across as thoughtless and cruel on more than one instance rather than loveable rogues. When that gets combined with a lack of any overarching plot or theme and an utter lack of characterization for anyone besides the titular lead, it makes for a weak novel despite some standout chapters that are charming.

Imagine Mary Poppins if she wasn't so priggish and instead a junk-food loving former circus performer who also happens to be a pig.

Droll in a Roald-Dahl-esque way, this would be a great classroom read-aloud for middle elementary grades.

This was a really fun read aloud with my kids. They loved the sarcasm and imagining getting away with things like Nanny Piggins let the children do.

My girls really enjoyed this book. It made for a really good read out loud to them. Plus it has a few pictures to keep them a bit more interested. Nanny Piggins is exactly that. She gets hired to be a Nanny for a family of 3 kids. However, they don't have the typical life as you can imagine, having a pig as a nanny. So you get to hear the strange stories that Mrs. Piggins has gone through in her life and the trips with the children. Visitors you may not expect. We'll be continuing to read the next 2 from this series soon.

Nanny Piggins is the Marry Poppins of this generation. She is no nonsense when it comes to fun, a platform I can get behind. I adored this book far more than I could have imagined at first glance. As a rule, I don't enjoy talking animal books (sorry, Redwall), but Spratt's writing is laugh out loud funny. From the school uniform incident through the doorknob thief, I was pleasantly surprised by the characters' appeal.

I like the style of the book, with each chapter serving as a separate and complete stories that interlink but do not necessairly need to be read straight through in order to appreciate it. I think it lends itself to relucant readers, both for this format and the humor, but also serves as a bridge from series chapter books to longer standalone works. Each chapter builds an expecation for the next that does not disappoint with each passing page.

If there were a Cybil write-in for book that caught you most off-guard, I'd have to hand it to Nanny Piggins - two chocolate smeared hands-down.

Three sweet children. One cheap dad who's a cheap tax lawyer. A mother who either died in a tragic boating accident or got fed up with the father and left him, along with a special secret. Oh and an emotional Russian bear. Plus a very, very bad nanny. Read this book if you want to drown in chocolate and just awful behavior. It is crazy satisfying without a single moral lesson. Well, ok, you learn that tax lawyers are disgusting. Highly recommended by Madeleine Albright. No, for real:

"The Adventures of Nanny Piggins is the most exciting saga about a flying pig nanny ever told. There is a laugh on every page and a lesson in there somewhere. I recommend it highly." - Former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright

I did not make that up. She knows where the fun is at.

YEARS after fanflailing from my friend Miriam -- years in which I recommended Nanny Piggins far and wide despite having never read it -- I finally read this story of Mary Poppins-style-nanny-finding gone horribly, horribly wrong.

I'm a little concerned about the enthusiasm with which I have pressed it on families. It *is* hilarious. And unexpected. And it makes sense that a pig in charge of children would lead to shenanigans that responsible adults would never consider. And goodness knows, the Cat in the Hat and Pippi Longstocking get away with it.

I'll keep telling myself that if a parent ever comes in to complain that it was, in fact, shocking.
