This was a silly, fun read that my whole family enjoyed. We never seem to go wrong with Santat, though.

This is cute, and I totally agree that actual carnivores should not feel apologetic about eating meat (after all, I do not feed my cats tofu). But I still don't think I'm going to be using this at storytime. It feels like it maybe has an agenda, and I'm not very comfortable with that.

Tongue in cheek, with fun illustrations, "Carnivore" made me laugh while I was reading it out loud to my six year old. While younger children wouldn't get the humor in this book, my first grader understood enough to be tickled. This is definitely a picture book that would be more appreciated by an older audience.

Carnivores have feelings too!

At first I wasn't diggin' this book, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized my reaction as I was reading was very similar to my initial feelings about I WANT MY HAT BACK. In fact, I could see this text being paired with I WANT MY HAT BACK to talk about whether we sugar-coat stories for kids or give it to them straight. Carnivores can't fight who they are. They eat other animals. It's what they do.

A lion, a great white shark, and a timber wolf all feel horribly made fun of in their environments because they eat other animals. They start a support group, but it can be hard to hide one's true nature. Readers will enjoy the funny tone throughout, though this book may be too much for some readers since they eat animals like cute little bunnies.

For: carnivore fans; readers wanting a funny book about understanding oneself.

Possible red flags: eating other animals; feeling excluded or made fun of.

I seriously laughed out loud. Just when I think this is going to have a wholesome "golden rule" theme, it whips around and slaps you with the truth. Hilarious and informative without sugar-coating the facts of life.
