It’s been awhile since I’ve read a Sandra Brown book and I forgot how amazing her writing is. Five stars! Realistically, more.

I could say this about all of her books: the plot was insane, the characters were intriguing, the spice was spicing, the end managed to surprise me, and her writing style is next level. Seriously, her books are incredible and any and all other synonyms for amazing.

What stands out to me about Sandra’s books, is how she predominantly writes mystery/suspense novels, but I never feel the romance is lacking. I am a romance reader through and through, and I normally can’t stray into the suspense world without getting bored. Sandra’s books are the exception.

Also, side note: this woman has written a billion bestsellers. How does she DO it? How does she not run out of material or create redundant stories and characters? Every book is unique. I highly recommend absolutely anything she has written! The end.

I wanted to bash my head against a wall throughout the entire time I was reading this book. While writing this review and rereading my notes on this book I actually shivered, they made me feel so uncomfortable. If I could give negative stars to this book, I would. The ending made me feel nauseous. I have absolutely nothing positive to say about this book.

*The main character Drex is the biggest AH out of all of the books that I've read so far. He's unlikeable, arrogant, creepy, predatory, always sexualizes Thalia, and has anger problems. He had pp measuring contests with two different characters. How did Drex know that Jasper was the killer? He had a hunch, a feeling. It was never explained, and we were never given a description of how he came to that conclusion. 'Having a hunch' is just bad writing.
*The 'romance' between Drex and Thalia. There was no chemistry, no romance, no tension. Just Drex's creepy thoughts about Thalia, and Thalia's thoughts of how she thinks that Drex is sexy. They didn't even know each other and were ready to die for each other. Why?
*The writing style is dry, with few descriptions of emotions, actions, and setting. The book is full of misogyny.
*Also this gem from Drex: "He wanted to kill her. But first, he wanted to fuck her. No, he wanted to fuck her, then torment her, then kill her."

I mean.... I kinda liked it. I did. But it was weird. I didn't feel like Drex and Talia had any reason to be so hard up for each other so quickly. The changing point of views often came at odd times and varied on who's point of view so often that it messed with me. I wasn't really surprised at any point. And Drex is a creep. Sorry but he kinda is... and that ending... "they did something they had never done together. They laughed out loud..." wtf. They knew each other, what? Two weeks. And she's pregnant. And they're laughing. That's so against the character as written, and would have been better just left out. So, I liked it. I did finish it. I was interested. But I remember SB being so much more than this, and I just wonder if it was the younger version of me who didn't see things the same way.

Drex Easton is working undercover to track the serial killer that murdered his mother, Lyndsay Cummings. He believes the man Weston Graham, aka Daniel Knolls, aka Jasper Ford is the murderer, and he will do whatever he can to bring him down. When he and his teammates, Gif and Mike track Ford (his current alias) to Charleston, Drex pretends to be an author working on a novel. He manages to rent a garage apartment next to Ford and his wife, Talia Shafer. Naturally, Talia is a beauty and Drex is immediately taken with her. When Talia and Jasper's friend, Elaine, is found murdered, the stakes climb higher.
This is a tale of tracking a serial killer with a bit of romance thrown in, the romance happens in all Brown's novels.
Not too heavy, not too dark, but a satisfying thriller with some sexy romance scenes.
