I'd never heard of Graham Masterton or the Katie Maguire series of novels before I came across this on Amazon. Detective Superintendent Katie Maguire is based in Cork, and is facing a hard decision in her personal life when she is dealt a gruesome and baffling case - someone is kidnapping, castrating, and murdering priests.

Going on the assumption that it's a gang of vigilantes looking for revenge (like in the movie "Sleepers"), Katie sets about finding the perpetrators. But as she starts digging, she finds out that the clergy are hiding more than they make out - and they do NOT want her to make it public.

I enjoyed reading this - although some of the torture scenes were hard to read, it was written well. I did find that there was a small bit of an overuse of colloquial language - I can't imagine someone exacting a brutal revenge on the man who wronged him while saying "what do you think of that boy, like?". "Mary, Mother of God" was thrown in there a few times too many as well, and I'm sure we only needed to be told once that Katie's ringtone was "The Fields of Athenry".

I could also have done without the very detailed description of Katie's boyfriend's genitals, it really added nothing to that particular scene or the story. Nor did the subplot about what happened to Katie's sister - I know that it was probably to lead us to believe that certain individuals really wanted to shut Katie up, but it turned out to be ridiculous and unbelievable (the person who supposedly did the thing to Katie's sister........why did they leave the message they left?! It was never addressed).

I thought the ending was really abrupt, but I thought everything bar what happened to Siobhan was wrapped up well. I'm looking forward to reading the next instalment in this series and I probably will go back and read the first. I liked Katie a lot, she was ballsy and clever.

3/5.
