We got into the VR dueling and I couldn't separate my brain from the MC standing in her room on her VR thing with her being in game like I could with Ready Player One.

I've heard of this book before but had never been drawn to it due to not being a gamer, but when I saw Slay was available through my library app. I decided why not check it out and see, since I can return it if it isn't my taste. But I liked it a lot. Kiera is such an amazing character, probably one of my favorite YA protagonists in a while and I would definitely recommend Slay if you're considering checking it out.

Loved the discussions about relationships, with yourself, your friends and family, a partner and your community.

Okay, I friggin LOVED this book, like LOVED this book. Now there were things that bothered me, or that I found annoying, some characters that I really hated, and some things that I don't fully agree with but over all I loved the book.

I love that our main character is a game developer, I love the idea of a black focused MMORPG that really embraced DIFFERENT black cultures and traditions, and I enjoyed several of the supportive characters as well.

This book was INCREDIBLE! Even despite calling the twist, I was still shocked when it was revealed. Please read this book!

What if there was a world just for black people to be themselves and be free from online discrimination and harassment for being black? There was a world like that created by a 17-year-old black girl in the book Slay by Brittaney Morris.

This was a time where me picking books based on their covers paid off. I had no idea this was going to be about a video game, but I fell in love with this book because (1) there was a badass black girl who was good at tech and (2) Kiera is the unapologetic black girl I wish I was growing up.

This teen bop (yes, I just called a book a bop because I’m hip) was the perfect metaphor for the double consciousness. In the book, Kiera was living in two worlds, on multiple levels: she was straddling the two worlds of trying to fit in and not be “too black” for her all-white classmates trying not to come across as a white sympathizer her hotep, I mean woke, boyfriend. And then she was actually split between the real world and the one she created, one that she kept a secret.

I’m glad Kiera felt comfortable enough to be her authentic self. She is young and navigating both worlds as your authentic self instead of being a version of your self in either worlds takes time.

1.5 stars rounded up because i hate giving books 1 star.
mild spoilers in the review but nothing too bad.... i marked the only important one so dw

okay so i had a lot of issues with this book. like a lot.

the idea for the book was great imo! a book about a black girl who created a video game, and then someone gets murdered irl because of the game, and then people start calling the game racist beacuse she only lets black people play. great concept right! (im not being sarcastic like i loved the idea thats why i picked it up in the first place)

but dude. ironically enough, this book was so racist. well, reverse racist, towards white people, which is still racist.

i hope i dont get hate for writing this, but it's my opinion. i'm saying, if a white person made a video game and black people weren't allowed to join, it would GET SO CANCELLED. but like, this main character expects it to be okay to make a game for just black people? WHY CANT WE ALL JUST COME TOGETHER, COLOR SHOULDNT MATTER! WE'RE ALL FRICKIN PEOPLE!!!

... and i thought the mc would realize that in the end and then i would have liked the book!

BUT SHE DIDNT!!! she just got mad, and just passed off all white people as racists. LIKE HELLO? THATS FALSE!!

so this book made me really angry.

the only thing i liked about this book was how she told off her stupid asf boyfriend for being a sexist ahole. i hated him and i wanted so badly to punch him in the face.
SpoilerI'm so glad he went to jail in the end, I hated his ass

anyway, there's my review. dont be racist people. towards white people or black people or any people. just chill tf out.

okay there's the review, up to you what you wanna do with it now. bye!
