I recognise that every adoption story is different, but this memoir seemed so unique to me (or maybe novel would be a better word?) since it features the story of an adoptee reuniting with her Korean birth family. Thoughtful and nuanced, I appreciated her perspective and how she slowly unfolds the narrative.
I really wanted to like this memoir, but I struggled to connect with the writer on a meaningful level. Nicole Chung was born prematurely to a Korean-American couple and placed for adoption while she was still in the NICU. She was adopted by white parents and raised in a white community. Chung recollects painful memories of micro- and macro-aggressions in her childhood and adolescence and questions that went unanswered about her family of origin (due to the closed adoption). As she prepares to have a child of her own, Chung embarks on a journey to find her birth family, a journey that is riddled with awkward moments, disappointment, and bursts of joy. Altogether, this is a great book for those who are considering adoption or have experiences with adoption. While I wasn’t as taken with the book as I’d hoped, I still enjoyed reading and learning.
Might've liked this more if I hadn't listened on tape. I thought it was worth the read, but it left me wanting to hear a little more. A little mixed on this one.

Really interesting account of a transracial adoptee, adopted into a conservative, white world (southern Oregon!). Eventually searches for her birth family but finds them a mixed bag and the contact challenging. Raw, honest, and really gives you the perspective of someone with a totally different life experience. I admire the author a great deal. Well written - interested in reading other books of hers.
A thoughtful biography illuminating the complexities and conflicting emotions of being a transracial adoptee.
Thoughtful, eye-opening, honest - everything I could want in reading a memoir and experiencing someone else's world.
I learned a lot about adoption from this, especially transracial adoption. I'm better for having read it.
A fellow adoptive parent and writer friend gifted me this book and I’m so thankful she did. I loved this story and the way Nicole wrote about this journey of reunion and this examination of her adoption. Beautifully written, thought-provoking, gorgeous and so very real. I loved it.
