I read this to find out what the main character was and waited the whole time just to never find out. It was an okay read but there was just nothing really special about it.

I feel a bit torn. I'll admit, the only reason I read this, was because my sister wanted me to reccomend her something like it.

It wasn't what I expected at all.

Brooks' Writing is intense, and sometimes a little too repetitive, but it gets better as the story progresses. At first I thought this to be a standard YA horror about non-humans and stuff. Turns out, it's actually about loneliness, emptiness, and wishing to be whole. I didn't see that coming. I liked it.

A fluent, easy read, perfectly fit for late night reading.

My favorite of all the Kevin Brooks books. Jaw dropping really. It makes you question what is really inside you, because you think organs and such but not for this poor man.

Kevin Brooks titles are not light reads! This one keeps you on the edge of your seat as Robert Smith and a "friend" go into hiding when what should have been a routine medical procedure reveals Robert has insides made of pulleys and silver filaments and other bionic (sort of) materials.

We never do really find out what Robert really is.

Great book, worst ending. It needs a sequel.

Wow, what a story! As soon as you pick the book up - you hit the ground running! Robert goes to the doctor for small exam - they think he might have an ulcer and just want to make sure.
From there, it all goes horribly wrong! After waking up to realize they are about to perform surgery instead of their simple exam - and they are talking about some weird things going on inside of him - he just keeps hear "what are you?" Robert realizes they are talking about him!

From there it's a sprint. Much like adventure books, you just keep turning the pages and turning the pages and he goes through his escape, his plan to hide and trying to navigate this world he now longer knows - as someone he isn't so sure he still knows either.

What am I?

Although I thought the hotel scene (near the beginning) was a bit more graphic then I'd like (and I like crime shows so I can do blood and gore) but otherwise, I did enjoy the adventure and the quick read.

I liked the book, I could not put it down for a minute, but the ending was just horrible...it brings the all thing down.
