my english teacher came up to me one day with this book and recommended it to me. we were talking about slavery in america in class so this book fit in pretty well. first off i'd like to say that i love how it is written. idk, it has a really high vocabulary which i like. dislcaimer; i'm not english, i'm from germany. the story itself is great too, the characters, the dialogues, pretty much everything. 4 stars!

I nearly forgot I read this one back in the day. Shout out to the Zora canon for reminding me!

Very dated, but some elements might make a good revamped movie in the right hands.

This book didn't cross my path while I was a young adult, but I wish it had. Virginia Hamilton does a great job of engaging with the history of the Underground Railroad in Ohio. She combined the "Ooo, cool! Hidden passageways!" factor with an interesting story. I really enjoyed the threads woven through the story that talked about evolving community, segregation, and choices about how to interpret and own the history of slavery and struggles against it.

If you're a fan of YA at all, read this. I first read it when I was a YA, and it has been a favorite ever since.

I read a review for this book stating it was the inspiration for Scooby Doo. I wouldn’t have made that connection myself but I totally agree. The writing felt a tiny bit clumsy in parts but overall a good book for the grades 4-6 range.
