The House of Dies Drear by Virginia Hamilton

5.0

This book didn't cross my path while I was a young adult, but I wish it had. Virginia Hamilton does a great job of engaging with the history of the Underground Railroad in Ohio. She combined the "Ooo, cool! Hidden passageways!" factor with an interesting story. I really enjoyed the threads woven through the story that talked about evolving community, segregation, and choices about how to interpret and own the history of slavery and struggles against it.
