Don't treat this as a straightforward history or you will be disappointed. As a collection of musings and ramblings, coupled together with legitimate research, this book is terrific, and I thoroughly enjoy Manguel's perspectives and connections to his own experience as a writer, and more importantly, a reader.

Bailing around the history of the book. I just am not very excited to read this book, because it is less history and more personal musings with evocation of historical anecdotes. I like the author and the ideas he visits in general, but his writing is not to my taste. I prefer something more ordered and logical. This book felt too disjointed and anecdotal.

A really captivating and interesting history of reading. This book has got everything and it keeps the attention of the reader. I never thought I wouldn't want to put down a non-fiction. I mean, non-fiction just isn't my style usually. But this. This was good stuff. I feel smarter.
