This book was a lot slower than the first and I found it focused on the hierarchical and political relationships in the world more than action to move the plot forward. While I still enjoyed it, especially the deepening relationships between the primary trio, I missed some of the action and pacing that was in the first novel in the series.

honestly this book was so bad, really bad, I don't know how the author wrote the first one and then this sequel. I almost dropped the book so many times and I kept pushing myself to finish... well I finally did

I think there was way too much plot crammed into this book so I didn’t love it as much :(

I wanted more Remy/Xioadan/Malekh content that was just character/relationship development and not just plot related. There just wasn’t enough of that for me.

Plus the pacing of the book was all over the place. The first half felt so slow and the last 30% had way too much going on. The big reveals happened so fast and there were new plots coming up late into the story.

I did still enjoy my time reading this, but definitely not as much as the first book. Generally, I like how the book ended, but wasn’t satisfied with how quickly we got there. Remy, Xiaodan, and Malekh are still an iconic couple tho 🖤

Well, it wasn’t quite as bad as I feared. The plot and world-logic here are a bit of a mess, lots of unnecessary complexity and inconsistencies in how things work.
His dad’s redemption arc didn’t feel earned at all to me, I was unmoved by both Isabel and Yost’s heel turns, and his mom turning into the night king never really made any sense.
I did think the relationships held up but just weren’t up for carrying the slogfest that was the rest of what was going on here. And Remy and Malekh stagnated when there was every reason for them to have gotten closer with events that happened at the end of 1 and through this book. Overall a pretty skippable conclusion to the duology.

***edit: downgrading because every time I thought about this book over the past couple days I got mad about how it handled
kink in the vampire courts. I can see scenarios where consent isn’t a part of it, but Malekh and Xiodan KNEW that submission and exhibitionism were going to be asked of Remy And then specifically didn’t tell him the details of said displays in advance!!!??? That’s gross! You’re supposed to be in a loving supportive relationship! Warn him before you ask him to eat you out in public!
