Wow. Just wow. One would think that after reading five books by Brandon Sanderson I would praise and appreciate yet no longer be amazed at the consistently fantastic quality of his work, but yet again I am thoroughly awestruck. The Bands of Mourning deserves its reputation and all the praise it gets.

I here usually give you hints about what the plot of the book is about, but I can't really do that with this book without giving away too much. Just read the blurb - that is sufficient.

Remember the two characters that were under-developed in The Alloy of Law and Shadows of Self? Well, one of them is a rather minor character, so the development she gets in her limited page-time is sufficient. The other - why do I bother hiding her name? You can probably guess who it is, and if not, well, the other reviews give it away. Steris finally gets the attention and character development she deserves in this book. Finally. And how good of a character she is! I won't say she is my favourite (that is still Marasi), but she's definitely among my favourites. Also, I think every character here experienced some form of development, and you can imagine how pleasing that was to me. Seriously, the character work in this book is fantastic.

One thing, however, amazed me even more than the character work. Well, two things actually. The twists, and the Sanderlanche. I have no words to convey the praise that they deserve. How in the cosmere does Sanderson manage to write such amazing twists and endings? I would say no more - read and find out yourself!

Overall, easily a 5/5. A million praises to this book and Brandon Sanderson.

Better than the previous two, but not by much - ultimately this series has taken far too long to get to any core issue for me, and a book like this should have begun a cycle, rather than being the second to last
