I loved it! So whimsical and exiting. Fresh, funny and fast-paced. I saw the film once, years ago, but I liked this book even more.
—————————
Quotes:
More about Howl? Sophie thought desperately. I have to blacken his name! Her mind was such a blank that for a second it actually seemed to her that Howl had no faults at all. How stupid! “Well, he’s fickle, careless, selfish, and hysterical,” she said. “Half the time I think he doesn’t care what happens to anyone as long as he’s all right—but then I find out how awfully kind he’s been to someone. Then I think he’s kind just when it suits him—only then I find out he undercharges poor people. I don’t know, Your Majesty. He’s a mess.”
———
“Go to bed, you fool,” Calcifer said sleepily. "You're drunk."
"Who, me?" said Howl. "I assure you, my friends, I am cone sold stober." He got up and stalked upstairs, feeling for the wall as if he thought it might escape him unless he kept in touch with it. His bedroom door did escape him.

I don’t know what to make of this book. It started off really interesting, but once Sophie got into the castle and met Howl, everything slowed down dramatically. The ultimate goal was for Sophie to be cured of her curse by Howl, and even though he was right there, it took an additional 300 pages for the curse to be lifted.
The in-between just felt like filler. She literally stayed in the castle, cleaned, and argued with Howl and Co. Her family is drawn back into the plot but only because Howl was trying to woo one of her sisters which led me to more questions. Why would Sophie be interested in someone who was just trying to date her sister…?
It’s so weird and drawn out. The outline felt drawn out.9 I didn’t like it.
