I quite like this book and remember being absolutely head over heels for the first book. But a four-ish year gap has dulled my memory of details which probably would have been helpful as I think the storyline picks right up from where we left off. So my recommendation is to re-read the first book before diving into this one.

This is a great book, but it was a difficult book for me, personally. It was much darker in tone than the first book to really drive home the horrors of war and colonialism. I appreciated the inclusion- in addition to the queer and nonbinary characters of the first book, we had more trans characters, physically disabled characters, and asexual characters. The darker tone made this a slower, more difficult read for me.

Loooooooooved this book. The writing, the story, the imagination, the ability to draw parallels between current events. As an adult I loved this series and I will be recommending it to everyone I can.

So many characters to keep track of and it has been just enough time between books that I might have forgotten about one or two, but it did come back.  Because there were so many characters I felt like it took away from the storytelling a bit.  The characters were so strong, but we never really got their whole stories.  Felt like there was more to tell.

I love the world this author built, but this story didn't hit quite as powerfully as her first. While I really enjoy multiple POV, I think there were so many POVs in this book that it made it hard to connect with individual characters in a lasting way, which made me feel disconnected from their clashing viewpoints - I wanted to be more conflicted, but the narrative didn't give me time to relate to each of them in a significant way. I did really enjoy the finale, and the magical qualities of this story really speak to me, but somehow there was still a disconnect.

That being said, I think this is a really solid YA fantasy with an anti-colonialist message, and maybe I'm asking too much of it. I think for young readers this will be an extremely satisfying fantasy read, and I hope this book does well with those audiences.
