The Siren, the Song, and the Spy by Maggie Tokuda-Hall

4.0

I love the world this author built, but this story didn't hit quite as powerfully as her first. While I really enjoy multiple POV, I think there were so many POVs in this book that it made it hard to connect with individual characters in a lasting way, which made me feel disconnected from their clashing viewpoints - I wanted to be more conflicted, but the narrative didn't give me time to relate to each of them in a significant way. I did really enjoy the finale, and the magical qualities of this story really speak to me, but somehow there was still a disconnect.

That being said, I think this is a really solid YA fantasy with an anti-colonialist message, and maybe I'm asking too much of it. I think for young readers this will be an extremely satisfying fantasy read, and I hope this book does well with those audiences.
