I didn't realize it would be a whole different perspective. I really grew attached to Alessandra but it was still an interesting storyline.

I was tricked into reading the first one and I was tricked into thinking the second would be any better... Rylee, I trusted your review that I would like this one more the shadows between us, and that's just not the case

It all just felt really cheesy - and it is wild to me that Chrysantha and Eryx let Kallias continue to rule knowing full well that his claim to the throne is entirely based on being the only one blessed with magical powers WHEN HE ISN'T THE ONLY ONE!!! at least tell the people the truth

I think I actually got whiplash from how fast Chrysantha went from hating Eryx to loving him to selling him out to the king to saving him from the king... It was all too much

This was a quick read and a great palette cleanser after finishing Glow of the Everflame. I liked this slightly more than The Shadows Between Us- I did go into this wondering how I could possibly like Chrysantha after that book after how vile she was in her letters towards Alessandra which made me not want to pick up the book, but I’m glad I did.

I think my biggest issue with this book (and it can’t be helped as it simply is just this way) is that it’s a YA book. I had to mentally age these characters up for it not to be so silly/goofy to me, and I think if this was adult or new adult, this book could’ve had so much more potential and could’ve really driven a 5⭐️ for me

Listen, I've heard not-so-great things about this book so I was fully prepared to hate this, I even had a review planned to start with "The Darkness Within Us put a darkness within me." But alas, I think I actually kind of enjoyed it?
It was more of a rollercoaster if anything to be honest. The first third was horrible, I hated it and I was questioning everything. The plot itself was okay, it's the writing I couldn't get past. At one point I found myself wondering how I even liked the first book. But there was a point where I stopped taking the book seriously and viewed all the absurd things as camp and fun and silly on purpose and I actually began to enjoy it? I'm a sucker for things like enemies to lovers anyway so that part was easy, and although I didn't exactly sign up for a furry romance of all things, it was tasteful enough that it didn't put me off too much. Plus you cannot deny the whole My Lady Jane feel the whole thing has. So for most of the second half I was really really into the plot and very invested in what would happen.
But of course the last chapter had to go ruin it. It wasn't that it was a BAD ending by any means, just very rushed (I remember getting to it and wondering how the hell Tricia was gonna wrap everything up in ONE chapter). Despite the horrible last chapter though, I think this book was a solid 3 for the entertainment value. A better written last chapter might have brought this to a 3.5.

I think it's funny to call a fantasy book unrealistic, but really that ending?
We're supposed to believe that a king who kills everyone with similar enough powers to threaten his rule would just LET ERYX GO? Because his sister-in-law (who he and his wife didn't even like till like a chapter ago might I add) came and said oh sorry for snitching I actually love him?
And the whole "He growled at me. I growled back." moment is so ridiculous I started cackling. Then the literal beast stops fighting to carry her off to the bedroom? Really? And after she literally betrayed his trust?
Come on Tricia, the idea was there, you could've done so much better than that ending.
