Thank you NetGalley for an advanced readers copy of The Darkness Within Us by Tricia Levenseller. It is a spin off/ sequel to The Shadows Between Us, with the main female character being from Alessandra’s sisters pov.
I’ll give a more detailed review when the book has been released and I can give away some spoilers. I did read the book all in one night. I did get annoyed at first with the feuding between Chystantha and Alessandra. Chystantha complained a lot and acted like a child a lot, but once the MMC got involved it became quite entertaining and I giggled a lot. I do which the couple of spicy-ish scenes we did have were more detailed but because of how it’s done, I’d title this as more of YA. I’ll give it a 4 out of 5 stars.

it may be the same rating as the first book. that’s because i really really enjoy this series. they are very very fast paced (first book took me 2-3 to finish & this one took me 3 days to finish)
same as the first: love the storyline, love how these book are like sisters life but separate into two books

Ahhh, I have so many conflicting thoughts about this one.
I don’t know if Tricia Levenseller always intended for there to be more than one book in this series, but I really struggled to connect with Chrysantha after how she was portrayed in the first book. I immediately fell in love with Tricia’s writing and characters in The Shadows Between Us, Alessandra especially. So coming off a fresh reread of book one, Chrysantha really got under my skin.
But I do think there’s a beauty in that dynamic. I have a feeling people who didn’t connect with Alessandra might share a kinship with Chrysantha. And I did eventually come around to understanding her and loving her in her own way.
I also have to mention how important I think it is for young women to read the messaging in these books. At their heart, they are stories of empowering young women to rise above oppressive standards perpetuated by men. I also love that even with no explicit spicy scenes (bc YA obviously), these books have very sex-positive messaging.
I will absolutely be seeking out more from Tricia Levenseller.

love this authors work and i love that it wasn't simply a repeat of the first book in the series
I loved our feisty, morally Grey heroine. It was a nice change from other fantasy books to have a heroine who believes in herself from the beginning. I also enjoyed how she plotted to stay in power. The book does read like a YA book though the topics are more adult.
