I actually thought this one was pretty fun. I liked it a lot more than the first, and the spite to love/enemies to lovers was great. There's also a bit of forced proximity and some fun moments. You follow the sister from the first book and get to see what she was getting up to. Also, that first chapter was quite the opener.

I think the writing and characters were better in this one, and I found myself much more engaged. I would say you would want the context of the first book for this one if you're going to read it. Overall, pretty good.

I really liked this book. I love the darker elements and both the fmc and LLC being morally grey.

Tricia Levenseller’s The Darkness Within Us is a cunning and delightfully twisted tale of ambition, deception, and power. At its heart is Chrysantha Stathos, a heroine who refuses to play by anyone else’s rules. Beneath the facade of a shallow, air-headed duchess lies a razor-sharp mind and a determination to secure her freedom—no matter the cost.

The author blends intrigue, humor, and romance in this fast-paced narrative wonderfully. Chrysantha’s schemes to outwitv the enigmatic Eryx Demos are as clever as they are entertaining. Eryx, with his mysterious powers and brooding charisma, is a compelling foil to Chrysantha’s sharp wit and ruthless ambition, creating an electric dynamic between the two.

With its sharp dialogue, vibrant characters, and an engaging blend of scheming and romance, The Darkness Within Us is perfect for fans of fierce heroines and high-stakes drama.

I must say the lovely look of the teen novel attracted me at first, with its decorative marbled edges. Diving into the story was equally a treat, as you meet strong-willed Chrysthana who, having married a now-deceased older man, revels in her freedom. All's well until the mysterious, handsome Eryx appears, claiming to be the true heir of the young woman's estate. Give this great book a try! - Louisa A.
