I was really excited about this ARC because I enjoyed the previous installment, "The Shadows Between Us." This book serves as a prequel to "The Shadows Between Us" in terms of timeline and follows Chrysantha (Alessandra's sister) as she is married off to an elderly and abusive Duke.

Overall, I found this book to be lackluster compared to the previous one. Chrysantha came across as immature, petty, and full of female rage. The romance felt very forced, lacking chemistry between the two main characters.

Read this book if you really miss this world and want to see little glimpses of Alessandra & Kallias.

Thank you Tricia Levenseller and Pushkin Press for providing me with the opportunity to read this ARC through @netgalley in exchange for my honest review.

This second book is still unlikely to be a reread for me, but I enjoyed it far more than the first in the series. I'm guessing this is mostly due to the FMC being an overall nicer person than her sister from book 1 (or maybe just more relatable to me because she wasn't obsessed with power, rude to servants, etc). It was sometimes difficult to keep reading through the FMC's issues because they were largely caused by sexism and therefore a bit too relatable, but I also wouldn't take points away from the author for her decision to tackle unsavory subject matter like that.

Thank you to NetGalley and publishers for this ARC!

I liked this installment more than the first which is very rare. Chrysantha who is a badass wanting to live her life. She’s sick of answering to other people and wants freedom to do what she wants and who she wants

Another regency romantasy? Yes pls
Chrysantha was honestly relatable - FUCK the patriarchy
the love story was meh, they “hated” each other for almost the whole book and we got like 10 pages of them finally being on the same page with their true feelings. The plot was good but execution was okay. The main struggle of the plot was in the last 15% and the resolution was done in 2 pages.
Good story, would have been so much better if the resolution and 3rd act struggle was developed more

God I hope there is another one coming in this series! I could not put this book down! I read it in 2 days! I actually messed up and didn't know at first this was a series reading this book first but even so The Shadow Between Us had the exact same effect of page turning thrills! The story lines were perfectly laid out.
